1. The Installation


1.1 Introduction

Purty is a fun and energetic agency, portfolio, and freelancer’s dream theme. It’s jam packed with loads of top-notch features, widgets, shortcodes, sliders and more…all to spice up your ever-growing presence on the interweb.

1.2 The Package

Download the package from your ThemeForest downloads and open the “purty-package.” Inside that package you will find the following files/folders:

  • Purty folder
  • Documentation folder
  • Licensing folder
  • PSD folder
  • Screenshots folder
  • Purty.zip

1.3 Installing the Theme

Log into your wordpress admin, which is typically www.yoururl/wp-login.php. Once you’re in, click on the Appearance tab and then click on Theme. Click on the “Install Theme”, which is located at the top of the page, and then click “Upload”. Locate the the file purty.zip and upload the zipped file to WordPress. After the theme zip is finished uploading, activate the theme by pressing “activate”.

2. Home Page Settings


2.1 The Template

Head into your WordPress dashboard and navigate to the “Pages” tab and click “Add New.” This is the standard way in which a page is created with the WordPress Content Management System. For the home page, simply select the Home Page Template from the Page Attributes menu on the right. Name your page and click publish. Note the recent portfolios and clientele area are widgets installed via the WordPress Widget Dashboard in the "Frontpage Widget" area.

2.2 Logo & Tagline

Your logo can be uploaded via the Theme Options Panel, within the General Settings Tab. To edit your tagline, navigate to the “Settings” and then “General” panel. You will see that your site name and tagline can be edited by the first two options there.

2.3 Sidebar Widget Area

The sidebar on the home page consist of one widget area, which is named “Frontpage Sidebar” in the Widgets Dashboard of the theme. Simply drag and drop widgets into the sidebar and they will populate on your website.

2.4 Newsletter Form

In order to grab some emails from your viewers, you need to grab some grab some code from your list provider (MailChimp, Campaign Monitor, Feedburner, ect.), remove the default styling, then apply the newsletter-form id to it. I've taken the code from the demo and placed it below for you.

3. Slider Settings


3.1 The Effects

This slider has 14 transition effects from which you can choose from. You may also turn on/off auto rotation and to have thumbnails or not.

3.2 Image Size

The recommended size (as demonstrated in the theme demo) is 642 x 271 pixels, though you may set the slider to any height you’d prefer. Just make sure they’re all the same size so that your site looks its best. Maintain the 642px width and you will not see any discrepancies with the layout of the theme.

3.3 Uploading Slides

To upload a slider, simply go into your WordPress dashboard and click on the “Slider” tab along the left side of your screen. Then proceed to click “Add New” which will then bring you to what looks like a standard post screen. Click on the media icon and upload your image. If you’d like a link associated with the slider image, just include it in the link field of the standard WordPress uploader. Then click “Insert into Post”. Proceed to publish, and your slider is live.

3.4 Sorting Slides

To change the order in which your slider images are displayed on your website, go into the Slider interface (Dashboard > Slider) and click “Sort Slides.” Drag and place your slides in the order in which you want them to appear on the live site.

4.Setting up the Portfolio


4.1 The Template

Create a new page within the “Pages” > “Add New” menu, with the “Portfolio” Template applied. Name and publish the page.

4.2 Adding a Portfolio

From within your WordPress dashboard navigate to the Portfolios tab along the side bar and click “Add New.” You may assign Skills (which is used to filter the portfolios), Choose a portfolio post type (Image, Slideshow, Video and Audio), set the date of completion, client info/url, and upload your images.

4.3 Uploading Images

To upload an image, click on the default “Upload/Insert Media” icon at the top of the WordPress editor, or the “Image Settings Panel” under the editor. The recommend size of the portfolio pieces is 658 x 403 pixels.

*Again, DO NOT click the “Insert Post” button within the image uploader. Click the “Save all changes” button instead.

4.4 Portfolio Featured Images

To upload a featured image, locate the Featured Image Panel on the Porfolio editor page and click “Set Featured Image.” The recommended featured image size is 307 x 164 pixels.

4.5 Sorting the Portfolio

To change the order in which your slider images are displayed on your website, go into the Slider interface (Dashboard > Slider) and click “Sort Slides.” Drag and place your slides in the order in which you want them to appear on the live site.

4.6 Portfolio Post Formats

  • Slideshow Portfolio Post Type
    First select the “Slideshow” Portfolio Type (located in the Portfolio Detail Settings Panel, beneath the WordPress Editor). Then upload images either through the “Upload/Insert Media” icon at the top of the WordPress editor, or through the “Image Settings Panel.” The recommend size of the portfolio pieces is 658 x 403 pixels. You may view your slideshow images by checking the gallery within the image uploader.
  • Audio Portfolio Post Type
    To upload a audio portfolio post, ensure that you first select the “Audio” Portfolio Type (located in the Portfolio Detail Settings Panel, beneath the WordPress Editor). Then locate the Audio Settings Panel and insert the URL for your audio file. You may use URLs for .mp3, .oga and .ogg audio files.To upload an image, click on the default “Upload/Insert Media” icon at the top of the WordPress editor, copy the file URL and paste it in the “Poster Image” field of the Audio Settings (below the editor). The recommended image size is 658 x 403 pixels. Be sure to enter your image height in the “Poster Image Height” field.
  • Video Portfolio Post Type
    To upload a video portfolio post, ensure that you first select the “Video” Portfo- lio Type (located in the Portfolio Settings Panel, beneath the WordPress Editor). Ensure that you set the Video Height (located in the Video Settings, beneath the WordPress Editor.) The recommended height is 400 pixels.You may host videos and pull in their URLs for .m4v and .ogv video files. If you are using something other than a self hosted video, such as YouTube or Vimeo, paste the embed code here. The recommended width is 658 pixels.

5.Setting up the Blog


5.1 Creating your Blog Page

Create a new page within the “Pages” > “Add New” menu, with the “Default” Template applied. Name and publish the page. From within your dashboard, navigate to the “Settings” panel and click on “Reading.” From the corresponding “Posts Page” drop down, choose the page that you just created (that has the Default Template applied). Ensure that you save your changes.

5.2 Adding a Blog Post

From within your WordPress dashboard navigate to the Posts tab along the side bar and click “Add New.” To add a custom excerpt, ensure the excerpt checkbox within the screen option is checked. (Top right of the blog page, near the Admin Bar)

5.3 Uploading Images

To upload an image, click on the default “Upload/Insert Media” icon at the top of the WordPress editor. The recommend width of the blog images is 642 pixels.

5.4 Blog Featured Images

To upload a featured image, locate the Featured Image Panel on the Porfolio editor page and click “Set Featured Image.” The recommended featured image size is 642 x 211 pixels.

5.5 Blog Post Formats

  • Slideshow Blog Post Type
    First select the “Slideshow” Portfolio Type (located in the Portfolio Detail Settings Panel, beneath the WordPress Editor). Then upload images through the “Upload/Insert Media” icon at the top of the WordPress editor. The recommend size of the images is 642 x 211 pixels. You may view your slideshow images by checking the gallery within the image uploader.
  • Other Post Formats
    There are 10 different post formats within Purty: standard, aside, gallery, link, image, quote, status, video, audio and chat. To modify your post format, you can find the selector right beneath the “Publish” button. Just select the one you would like and post away. (For the chat post format employ the following shortcodes: [chat] Lorem Ipsum [/chat])

6. Theme Options Panel


6.1 General Settings

The General Settings is where the most of your customization comes from. You can choose one of theme styles from there, set your link color, set your logo, upload your favicon, add your custom footer text, and even your analytics tracking code. Images uploaded using the Theme Options Panel will be located in the site/wp-content/uploads/rtw folder. Here's a shot of the Theme Options Panel:

6.2 Slider Options

Here is the area where you set your slider effects (14 total options), decide if you would like your slider on auto play or not, pick your slider controls (auto-generated thumbnails, arrows, or nothing) and lastly, the rate in which the auto slider rotates.

6.3 Page Settings

The Page Settings tab is more focused on the content output of headings, sub-headings, show/hide tags on posts and your comments form text. It is also the area where you decide if you would like a 2 or 3 column portfolio and a 1 or 2 column blog.

6.4 Social Icon Settings

This is the area where you can opt into putting your social media icons to the top of Purty. Just insert your URL's/Usernames and the links will be generated accordingly. If you leave out your information, they will not populate on your website.

6.5 SEO Settings

That’s right, there’s Search Engine Optimization built right into this theme. No more installing third-party SEO plugins, that may or may not function properly with your WordPress theme. With Purty, it’s all here in one nifty bundle. The SEO Options even appear on each post or page, so you can take advantage of each search engine optimization opportunity possible. You’ll see, after reading the round-up below, the full breath and power of the SEO Settings woven into the core of Purty:

  • Set your Homepage Title Layout
  • Enter your Homepage Meta Keywords/Phrases
  • Enter your Meta Description
  • Insert your Singular Meta Keywords and Description
  • Set your Page, Archive, Search Results, and Single Post Title Layouts
  • Specify a custom title separator
  • Enable/Disable Follow Meta Tags for all posts
  • Select which contexts are not indexed by search engines

6.4 Import/Export

Here you can export your theme code and even import theme options.

7. Widgets & Shortcodes


7.1 The Custom Widgets

  • Flickr Widget
    This custom widget can be applied via the Widget Panel. You may add a title, insert your Flickr ID, set the number and type of photos you’d like to display, set the output as random or latest and even add a little descriptive message.
  • Testimonials Widget
    This custom widget can be applied via the Widget Panel as well. The widget generates up to three testimonials whereas you enter the name, company, role, image URL and associated testimonial.
  • Custom Images Widget (Clientele)
    This custom widget can be applied via the Widget Panel. This widget outputs up to five images, a title, and a description/subtitle if you'd like it there.
  • Social API Counter Widget
    After entering your social links, this widget grabs the follower/subscriber count and links to the corresponding social media accounts. The widget is built for facebook, twitter, rss and dribbble.
  • Custom Recent Posts Widget
    This widget can be applied via the Widget Panel and is built to be used in the sidebar areas in the theme. You can set how many posts that populates.
  • Custom Recent Portfolios Widget
    This widget is designed to be displayed on the home page. It pulls in your most recent portfolio posts. You can set the number of posts that populate.
  • Custom Twitter "Latest Tweets" Widget
    This custom widget is applied via the Widget Panel in WordPress as well. Just drag it to the Home Sidebar and set your twitter name and the desired amount of tweets you’d like to pull in. You can opt to have a link to your twitter account to, by putting some in the last field, such as “Follow Me.” (as in the demo)..

7.2 The Custom Shortcodes

  • Grade-A Shortcode Generator
    Seamlessly built into the WordPress editor is a simple-to-use shortcode generator button set. No more sifting through the detailed documentation to find your shortcodes. Just simply press the icon and select your shortcode.

  • Social Media Icon Shortcodes
    Show some social love with these nifty icons. All you have to do is hit the social button in the WordPress editor, choose your desired icon, and drop in your link.
  • Tabbed Content Shortcode
    This shortcode can be accessed through the WP Editor (
  • Toggle Shortcodes
    Enter toggled text (especially great for FAQ sections) by pressing the toggle icon in the WordPress editor and entering your text in place of the lorem.
  • Three State Buttons & Icon Buttons
    We’ve included six three-state buttons as the default buttons in Purty. Also included is a neat “Icon Button” feature, where you have even more powerful customization possibilities. Just hit the "plus" icon in the WordPress editor and choose your color and set your link. To use the icons, choose one of the icons in the list below and include it in your shortcode → [button_link style="white" url="#" icon="add"]Add it[/button_link]

    There's five variations of message notifications. They can be inputted via the WordPress Editor/Shortcode Generator
  • Featured Area Shortcodes
    There’s 18 built-in Featured Area shortcodes at your disposal. Select your icon then add your title/description. It’s easy, looks cool and is great to feature stuff (like services, skills, factoids and the like).
  • Pricing Tables
    Easily enter some pricing tables into your site by using this shortcode. All the fields are generated for you and you just enter your information in place of the lorem.
